California is on the verge of requiring all electricity to come from renewable sources, and at least one association called the development great news.
The California Legislature is poised to pass legislation requiring all electricity sold in the state to come from solar, wind and other renewable resources by 2045, the Sacramento Bee reported Thursday. The bill would be the second of its kind in the nation, with Hawaii already having a similar mandate. The California legislation also is viewed as a sharp rebuke of the Trump administration, which has sought to revive the coal industry and roll back environmental regulations.
The Solar Energy Industries Association is among the bill's supporters. In a statement, CEO Abigail Ross Hopper said the proposed law "will lead to significant investment and jobs creation in California, and elsewhere in America."
"The California Legislature's bold move to advance legislation that requires 100 percent clean power demonstrates that massive advances in clean energy indeed make a carbon-free power grid a true possibility," she said.
Hopper also urged lawmakers to pass separate legislation requiring utilities to speed up procurement of renewable resources. "Without serious near-term action, ambitious long-term goals will be hard to reach," she said.
Opponents of the legislation say California consumers will be saddled with higher electric bills if the legislation passes. The California Senate is expected to vote on the bill this week, which will then head to Gov. Jerry Brown to be signed into law. http://bit.ly/2PbZdKc
